REALTOR® of the Year Sandy Kauffman
The identity of AAR’s REALTOR® of the Year is always a big secret, its revelation filled with layers of clues to help the audience guess the recipient’s identity. This year, the award’s presenter, Bruce Gardner, told the audience right away that the award would go to a man…but finally revealed that in fact, it was going to a “very special man…a ‘Kauff-MAN.” Longtime member Sandy Kauffman accepted the award with her usual understated wit, honoring others including her past brokers for their impact on her career and her life, and thanking her best friend and soul mate, husband of 35 years Ray. Kauffman’s commitment to the Association has been unwavering year after year, and the audience’s standing ovation clearly showed that her dedication has been much appreciated by fellow members.

Affiliate of the Year Ryan Urbach
Affiliate of the Year Ryan Urbach touched the audience at AAR’s Inaugural Celebration with sincere expression of his appreciation and love for his family, who traveled from Grand Junction to surprise him as he accepted his award. “It’s really humbling to stand up here and to have them here,” he said, gesturing to his parents who stood nearby. “I had no idea, but this is what they do,” he said, telling the audience that he learned to be giving and caring from his family. Urbach also thanked his wife Amy, who he said supports his every move, his every effort to go the extra mile in his job. “She’s my float in this rocky water of a business we work in,” he said. Urbach is joined by last year’s winner, Tom Gould, left.

Community Service Award Winner
Daryl Oliver

AAR’s Community Service Award, also known as the Good Neighbor Award, went to Daryl Oliver, whose groundbreaking program called “Brotherhood” is changing lives for at-risk boys in four area schools. Oliver started Brotherhood after volunteering his time to work with a single class and realizing that many of their father figures were absent. “I realized that just going up there and talking wasn’t enough,” Oliver said. The program shows the boys how to face adversity with pride and self respect; often, Oliver’s real estate business comes second to his volunteer efforts because he’s so deeply dedicated to being a positive role model whose presence is real and solid to the children he works with. “It’s a passion, and it’s something I love,” Oliver said. He hopes someday to take the program to national levels.

President David Barber
Incoming President David Barber marked the beginning of his leadership year surrounded by his three sisters, each of whom flew from out of state to support him. Barber’s Inaugural theme, “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” inspired by singer Jimmy Buffett, made for a casual atmosphere at the event – and Barber’s message was one of hope for his coming leadership year. “As we sail forth into the upcoming year, the greatest challenges many of us will face are ‘Changes in Attitude’ ~ we will truly go where we are looking and the key to success in this new market will be one eye on the compass and one on the horizon,” he said. “This year will bring us a renewed sense of success and prosperity. At the same time, we must effect some ‘Changes in Latitude’ by regaining the trust of our colleagues and more so, our community.”

President’s Distinguished
Service Award

Outgoing President’ Barb Cline (right) awarded the President’s Distinguished Service award to (left to right) Ann Bagwell, David DeElena and Dick Crook. Bagwell, she said, has given AAR her unwavering commitment since becoming an Affiliate member in the 1980s. Cline called DeElena “an outstanding president who hasn’t stopped giving,” citing his work in the Government Affairs arena of the Association. Cline said that Crook, who has been her managing broker for 15 years, is an “inspiration and one who leads by example.” The President’s Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor a president of the
Association can bestow.
