We have all heard the expression “You get out of it what you put into it.”
When we start something new, it is sometimes difficult to jump in with both feet and without hesitation. But when we do, our efforts are always rewarded. It is my goal in the coming year to get more of our members involved in Association activities – to help more members jump in with both feet.
I would like to see more members attending Friday morning REALTOR® Update meetings, serving on committees, attending the Lunch ‘N’ Learns and networking at social functions. As a matter of fact, I challenge each of you to add something to your schedules in the coming year that gets you involved in Association activities. Whether you are new to our industry or a seasoned broker, the involvement will come back to you.
The Association is putting together the committees for the coming year. Take a look at the list, see where you think you could contribute or learn, and contact AAR immediately.
Nominating Committee – Nominates candidates who would like to serve on the Board of Directors for either the local or state association (meets several times in the spring).
Professional Standards Committee – Enforces the Code of Ethics and resolves disputes through ethics and arbitration hearings. Members of this committee must have attended a Professional Standards training class (which is very interesting). Committee size is limited and meets as needed.
Grievance Committee – Determines the validity of ethics complaints or requests for arbitration. Again, members of this committee must have attended a Professional Standards training class (which is still very interesting). Committee size is limited and meets as needed.
Government Affairs Committee – Study issues and make recommendations for Board consideration regarding public policy, legislative or regulatory effects. This is one of the most interesting committees where you really have the opportunity to learn about the proposed changes that affect our industry. If you have never joined an AAR committee before, I highly recommend this one. It meets once a month.
Investment Committee – Makes recommendations to the Board of Directors for the investment strategies and implementation for board designated funds. It meets several times a year.
Membership Linkage Committee – Creates programs that enhance a closer link between the Association and its membership
Candidate Interviews Committee – Conducts interviews of political candidates prior to election to determine recommendations for endorsement and or support of campaigns. This is another interesting committee where you have the chance to learn about candidates and assess whether they are “REALTOR®-friendly.” Meets as needed prior to elections.
CARHOF Committee (Colorado Association of REALTORS® Housing Opportunity Fund) – Advises the Association about opportunities for ongoing contributions to CARHOF
PSF (Political Survival Fund) – Collects money from the membership for the Political Survival Fund and RSDC (REALTOR® Small Donor Committee). This committee has the chore of educating our membership as to its importance; once a member sees the value, he/she is usually eager to donate. Meets as needed, usually in the spring and summer.
By joining a committee, I truly believe you will empower yourselves to take more responsibility for your own lives in our small world where everyone counts. We need to renew our spirit of community, a sense that we are all in this together. Let’s all work at making the real estate community a better place because we were involved. You make the difference!
